Safer working conditions

Your safety is our priority. IBEW Local 143 members receive industry-leading OSHA training to ensure they stay safe on jobsites and to help ensure others work safely as well. Our Collective Bargaining Agreement mandates that contractors meet strict safety standards on jobsites, which reduces the risk of injuries and creates a safer work environment.

A Voice on the Job

As a union member, you will have a say in workplace decisions. Through the collective bargaining process, we ensure your concerns are heard and addressed. This creates a fair, respectful and safer working environment. Together, we stand stronger and achieve more.

Union Camaraderie

Joining IBEW Local 143 means becoming part of a Brotherhood and Sisterhood that stands by your side. Our members support each other, celebrate successes and work together to make a difference in the industry and the community.

Employment Opportunities

Anyone who has worked within the construction industry knows there are periods of slowdown. While there is the possibility that members may be laid off, they do not have to wait for future work opportunities with one contractor. Our members have access to employment opportunities with multiple employers within our jurisdiction. Should you become unemployed, the Local 143 hiring hall will help you find work with other union signatory contractors.

Based on the current construction environment, many of

our members work year-round and have done so for years.

Layoffs are not exclusive to Local 143 members or the construction industry. That being said, the rumors of annual long periods of unemployment are not true. This is another tactic used in the non-union sector to keep paying employees lower wages and keep them stuck in unsafe working conditions.

Another tactic used by the non-union sector is the threat of strikes. They may claim that you could miss multiple

paychecks if the union goes on strike.

However, the IBEW is a leader in labor-management relations and operates with a no-strike policy. If negotiators for both sides are unable to settle a contractual disagreement, the arguments are presented to an arbitration council, whose decision is final and binding on both parties.

The ability to travel

Members of the IBEW also can travel nationwide for work opportunities in other IBEW Local Union jurisdictions.

If work becomes slow in the jurisdiction, you can go to work in neighboring territories or in any other state where an IBEW Local Union has indicated they need the help of travelers.

In the age of megaprojects, it is not uncommon for some IBEW members to travel around the country working on dierent massive projects.

Stop paying non-union dues

At IBEW Local 143, we invest in your future. Our training programs are designed to keep you ahead of the curve with the latest industry advancements and certifications. Whether you are looking to refine your skills or explore new opportunities, we provide the tools and resources to help you succeed.

For those who test in at the journeyman level, you will have reduced wages and benefits that the worker receives.

Thanks to our Collective Bargaining Agreement, our contractors supply all power tools, cords, ladders and specialty equipment. Our members only provide the hand tools necessary to perform the ordinary functions of the electrical trade. If you spend thousands of dollars on tools and equipment to secure your employment, you are paying non-union dues, which are usually much higher than union dues.
